![]() ![]() He then demonstrates how to distract Jeff by dropping a vodka bottle onto the ground and showing him follow along. Alyx kills the barnacle for Larry, who thanks her by letting down a ladder for her to climb and warns her to look out for "Jeff."Īlyx meets Larry again a few minutes later while navigating above a long hallway, where he points out Jeff, a massive blind zombie. She rounds a corner to find Larry with his leg caught in a barnacle tongue, trying to negotiate with the barnacle to let him go while also deciding whether or not to cut off his leg. When Alyx first meets him he is carrying some beer bottles, suggesting he went into the distillery to find alcohol.Īlyx first encounters signs of life in the distillery when she hears a voice having a one-sided conversation. However, his ability to survive in the Xen-infested area for so long strongly implies he has some experienced survival skills. I don’t think a safe zone was enough of a breather for me.Larry's background, whether as a human who was left in the Quarantine Zone or a Rebel who went in to scavenge for some items such as vodka at the distillery is unclear. Then I could “reset” more before going back in for the final confrontation. Maybe if they broke up the Jeff level a little with a Combine fight or a cool story beat once you finally get out of the elevator. I found the length of the horror post of “Is or Will Be” more matched my tolerance for amount for time in horror scenarios. I read and article that the devs had some trouble balancing that exact “burn out” feeling so it kinda makes sense since my horror tolerance is really low. I think the level is just too darn long form me and I get “burnt out on Jeff” about a quarter of the way through and then there’s still more to do and I get mad about it. It feels almost more like a VR showcase than something I find straight up “fun”, if that makes sense? I feel a little more forgiving this morning though and I do think some of the scripted moments are cool. Or maybe I should just suck it up, since it is technically a level design that does belong squarely in a HL game. More like a: "I wish this was over so I can get back to the game that I enjoy" kind of way.Īnyway, I'm just hoping to commiserate with some other people that feel the way I do. But it doesn't make me angry in a "that was maddening, but worth it!" sort of way. I get that these types of enemies have shown up before (like the tapping claw thing in HL1), but for some reason this enemy, in particular, just makes me angry. ![]() And I feel a little angry that an invincible enemy made it into a game that I really enjoy and want to finish. I don't play games like Amnesia or other games with invincible enemies. But in Half Life at least I can shoot the horror in the face. I think the issue is: although I go into every Half Life game expecting horror, I'm not really a huge horror fan. I will definitely be choosing to crush Jeff to death in the trash compactor when I finally make it to that part. I'll finish the level for real in a day or two, since I'm sure the rest of the game is worth it. I had to take the headset off for the night. I googled the bug and it seems like other people have had the gate crank wheel stick itself inside the wall too. Not only did I not enjoy the level, but I encountered a glitch that forced me to reload an earlier save and go through it even longer than should have been necessary. Everything up to this point was awesome too, so I'm a little grumpy about it and wanted to see if anyone else shares my experience? I want to enjoy the level, but I just don't. ![]() ![]() I especially appreciated the moment you realize you have to let Jeff back out of the freezer after you lock him up the first time. ![]()
